Mitch i think believing in God is the exact same as believing in santa or the easter bunny. But i think it is an absolute must to let kids believe in these characters as long as possible.
I remember I never had that magical feeling on xmas or easter after i found out they weren't real. The point is, when you stop believing, it just means you are growing up, and becoming a "grown-up". This is not a bad thing at all.
But I don't agree with telling kids santa and the easter bunny are not real at a young age, it is really destroying their fun. When they get to that age where they can understand why you lied to them about it in the first place, they will agree with what you did.
And no matter how or when they find out, it maybe really bad or they might be fine with it, but those years they had with these magical characters were the best of their lives...

sharlet i told my children that s, EB and tf is not real its just your parents they
beleived me and they never beleived in the EB. S and TF.
