Ruth Good article. Thanks so much.
I read somewhere on the Web that Witch Hazel removes toe nail fungus. Well, I tried it; after all I had a pitch black right second toenail, a grayish right large toenail, a blackening of my right little toenail, and a gross-looking thick half yellowish left large toenail. It was obvious that fungus was running wild with me, and that I had nothing to lose.
I noticed a difference in the color of my black nail IMMEDIATELY after applying and rubbing in the Witch Hazel with a soft cloth (I did not have any cotton balls at the time). I even saw a black spot of fungus on my right little toe that was zapped and disappeared Immediately! My left large half toenail is now almost all clear and is finally growing back.
NOW, HERE IS WHAT I THINK EXCELLERATED MY QUICK RESPONSE MENTIONED ABOVE: I CAREFULLY filled down my infected black nail almost to the bed, and the other troubled nails to a reasonable thickness so that the Witch Hazel could penetrate better.
It has only been about 2 weeks of on and off applications of the Witch Hazel with cotton balls about twice daily, or when I think of it, and my nails are reviving beautifully.
HINT: Make sure you rub the Witch Hazel in with the cotton ball, soaking as much as possible, using a different cotton ball for each infected toe.
Finally, I quickly wipe all the other toes with one fresh cotton ball, as nail fungus is contagious. I use a fresh cotton ball when tilting the Witch Hazel from the bottle-not sure if this is necessary. I just don't want to put any impurities in the bottle.
Hope this helps someone.
All the best.

Dee Do you cut off any part of the nail that has detached? 12/19/2011
meself I have been using Vinegar to heal my toenail problem. It is working well! You need to keep your nails short, don't put nail polish on them, and it is so easy to just soak the affected toenail with vinegar(using a cutip or cottonball) before and after putting socks and shoes on. Does not take a lot of time and money. It IS working for me and I can't wait to go get a pedicure soon! 12/11/2011
katey m i have tried bleach but the fungus persists 11/6/2011
AL C Home Remedies were good but if you want a more effective remedy i know an alternative product. You can use Fungusil. According to what I've read it is effective and has no side effects. 8/19/2011
Tony Morrone I found the Tea Tree oil has helped cure my fungus on my big toes 5/9/2011
John Joseph It is almost impossible to completely and permanently cure toenail fungus. Your
general doctor or podiatrist may not recommend treatment.

Sarah B. Calamine lotion, which is essentially, zinc oxide with a very small amount of iron oxide, meaning a compound of zinc with traces of a compound of iron, similar to forms of zinc appearing in nature, is widely used, mainly for soothing skin from irritations ans itching. However, it appears that zinc oxide and calamine lotion, which are as I had said very similar, are effective for a variety of microbial infections, including onychomycosis - toenail fungus. I have been using this on my toenail, which was infected and yellow almost through, for about 7 months. Firstly only at evenings - I would dash a few drops and let it dry and harden in the air, and after seeing it was working and also that the layer of calamine of the toenail needed "refreshing" in the mornings, I would dash a few more then. After 7 months, as I had said, my toenail is now half clear - the bottom half - and looking almost as good as new, so to speak. However I had recently started using nail varnish, and so prefer to have varnish on all my fingernails, and since my grandfather told about a anti-fungal medication in the form similar to varnish, I decided to use it instead, and apply regular varnish on top of it. However, calamine lotion is, it seems to me, a cheap, widely available, in certain parts of the world, and safe treatment for onychomycosis. I would mention, that the zinc seems to dry the nails a bit, not something too serious, and that it does take a bit of skill and patience, to apply the calamine lotion on the nail, totally covering it. Usually, I would apply two thin layers, thus letting the calamine dry faster. Hope you find this helpful. 3/18/2011
Paul Kinsinger The vinegar or listerine soaks are to laborious and time consuming. My product Dr Paul's Piggy Paste take these to active agents in a superior penetrating gel and is easy ,topical, covered daily by a band aid and takes 12 -16 weeks to solve the problem. Have the readers check out piggypaste on google. Anyone can have clean healthy appearing nails in 2011 Dr Paul 12/24/2010
Jerry My big toenail was over half infected with black fungus. Due to the smell, I chose Listerine instead of vinegar. Rather than sitting around for 20 minutes twice a day, I soaked a cotton ball in Listerine and secured it to my toenail with tape - then put on my socks and shoes and went on my way for the morning. (Or evening.) I did this twice a day for 9 weeks! Sure enough, it worked! 8/29/2010

Rosalind If you have polish on your toenails, do you need to remove the polish before soaking your toenails? 8/4/2010
Craig I've been doing the apple cider vinegar treatment for a few days now and I have a couple questions:

1) Is it possible to get rid of the smell? Even if I wash my feet after each treatment twice with soap, they still smell of vinegar, and so does my apartment, even though I leave the windows open. My socks smell of vinegar too.

2) Am I supposed to use a new solution each time?

Thanks!

Frank Here is another cheap and easy way to spend a little more, and cure your toe fungus. (Finger Cots are reusable, Band-Aids aren’t.)

To use vinegar, put a Band-Aid over the affected toe, and put a few drops of a good cider or white vinegar on the Band-Aid cotton pad. Keep the pad damp. You can cut your vinegar with water if you like, it will take longer, but it won’t hurt as much. I use a 1 part vinegar to 6 parts water for my treatments of fungus. I wouldn’t expect to use more than a small bottle of vinegar for the complete treatment. This treatment will take awhile, have faith.

The same Band-Aid treatment works for baking soda; only put a sprinkle of soda on the area, cover with a Band-Aid and keep damp. The messy nail should clear up in a while; keep the treatment up until fall 2010.

Baking Soda is also a great cure for Athletes Foot; just keep the area powdered for two weeks. Notice, I said cure, right.

ED – Don’t use Hydrogen Peroxide, it is damaging to good skin and helpful bacteria. Don’t ever put it in your mouth! It can cause you to develop Thrush. (Google "Thrush" - it’s disgusting!)

Dick/Jan These home remedies sound great, but can the vinegar be re-used or do I have to buy several gallons? 4/24/2010
Eliza Very helpfull, thank you 4/24/2010
Frank This is the way I cheaply cured my toe fungus.
All fungus lives only in a very narrow pH range. It is very sensitive to a change in pH level; mess with the pH and the fungus dies. Because of this sensitivity, vinegar and sodium bicarbonate are effective treatments for toe fungus; vinegar is an acid, sodium bicarbonate, (Baking Soda,) a mild alkaline.
(Spray 1 part vinegar and 6 parts water on your rose fungus and the fungus is gone the next morning. Unfortunately, toes take a little longer.)
The way to treat the infected area is to keep it wet with a water and vinegar or water and baking soda solution for a period of time. I have found that filling a finger cot or the cut off fingers of a plastic medical or sink glove with a solution of baking soda and taping it onto the toe overnight for a month or two is very effective at curing toe fungus.
Your body will begin to react to the topical application of this stuff by becoming a little painful. (It too doesn’t like its pH messed with.) Stop treatment until you feel that you can take up the cure again.
The pain isn’t the "Red Death" of cancer of course, but you’ll know that it is there.
The prescription toe medication that hurts your liver so bad needs to be administered for a year. The reason that vinegar is said not to work is that treatment is stopped early. Curing toe fungus is a time consuming project. Keep up your treatment until toe recovers normal color and the nail has grown out.
