I really enjoyed this article. I am about to move to MS and on the property is a lake. I am sure there are snakes there as well. I would like more inormation as to where I can obtain a family of these mongoose. |

Re your article on the mongoose as a pet: I was surprised and gratified to find any entry at all under a "pet mongoose" internet search, much less one that acknowledged their desirability as pets. I have variously been criticized for "keeping" an "exotic" pet, told that it was inappropriate, and that one day, my most charming friend, Arrow the mongoose, would revert to wild and "turn" on me. Complete, ignorant nonsense. In the wild, a mongoose may live six to eight years, barring a mishap such as a tiger or a human brush bristle hunter. Arrow, however, lived comfortably in a small house with my wife and I and our two cats almost to nine and a half years old. (I have written a book about his life in our home, but gave up on the usual cumbersome, tiresome, and time-consuming publishing route, and decided to publish it myself.) |

Daddyluver365, You are alowed to have pet ferrets in the U.S. you just have to live in the state that allows you to have them as pets. I have three ferrets and they are sooo funny. And if you get one make sure to get teo or else the other one will get lonely. |

I looked this up on Google after watching a segment by Steve Irwin in Sri Lanka. One village that he visited had a tame mongoose and he was playing with it. Really funny and adorable. Irwin was pretending that his fingers were snakes and the mongoose was (gently) attacking them. Hilarious. |

This article was very helpful to me because I was looking for another household pet (besides a ferret) that is attracted to shiny objects. I am dissapointed, though, that a U.S. citizen cannot own a ferret, but I still appreciate all the important information that this article had to offer. |

i really like mongooses, i'm also really afraid of snakes so a mongoose would be the perfect pet for me. |

An adult king cobra will NOT be bothered by a puny mongoose, it's simply too large to kill, and could swallow a mongoose whole. Fortunately, most snakes, even ones such as the King Cobra, would much rather flee than stand and face you, so there is little need for mongooses as company. As far as them making good pets, a mongoose is much like a ferret (they are related after all) so expect a very aloof and distractable animal, who isn't exactly as affectionate as a dog. In addition, they are far more likely to target baby birds and eggs or baby snakes than a full grown cobra. |

I just love your article on the Mongoose. One of the the RN I work with said she had a snake problem so I suggested that she get herself a Mongoose, she didn't know what it was, I ask if she ever heard the story about Rikki-Tikki, and she said No.
So I had to look it up on the computer.

I live in Hawaii, not sure what kind of mongoose is here, but they are very social, and are very active in the day.
