Sue Rongey I am a dealer and have great concerns about vent free fireplaces. Your suggestion of buying a vented fireplace if you can is excellent.
In reference to a "certified Package" We initially sold units with the logs built in. If the logs smell, you are stuck. You cannot put in another log set different from the built in one. We believe a better solution is to sell a universal firebox that meets the standards required for the log set and then when something new and better comes along the consumer has options. I would be interested to know if you ran your tests with Natural Gas or Propane. It makes a difference in the operation. Chemical added to Propane to give it odor, can have a negative effect on the smell associated with vent free fireplace.
