Irritable Bowel Syndrome Diet

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is exactly what the name suggests. Irritating. It is usually caused due to a colon that does not function normally. Depending on the symptoms, a proper diet not just relieves the symptoms of IBS but helps cure it too.

Dana Animal products make IBS worse since they are full of pus, blood, feces, antibiotics, hormones, pesticides, etc. They are not food. 5/28/2009
L Tverberg This is a shockingly ill informed article. Some of its recommendations are about the last things that a person who has an active case of IBS should be eating. I'm speaking as a person who has it, along with having a Ph.D. in Physiology.

In particular, insoluble fiber, which is found in raw fruits and vegetables, is a potent and effective way to worsen bloating, pain and gas, not relieve it. Whole grains and high fiber may be healthy for the population as a whole who eats too much over-processed foods, but to a person who is having intestinal distress and IBS, they are the last thing to recommend.

I'm just shocked you have this information available online.

mike I have had IBS for almost 20 years and have had no medical relief. My personal opinion is that is a microbial infection yet to be identified. The following have helped for me. Drink only distilled alcoholic beverages. I think there is a symbiotic relationship with yeast and another microbe. Also taking zinc suplements helps as well. Increase the amount of water you drink particularlly at meal time. Eat one serving of the the new yogurts that claim to help the digestisive system. Reduce the processed straches in your diet and chew gum after meals. It is my beleif that people with IBS do not produce enough enzyme for breaking down starch and consequently when it gets to the large intestine, microbes decompose it. 4/14/2008
Pibbster As an IBS sufferer, there is a lot of erroneous information here - especially about eating salads. A big downfall of the Internet is that anyone can write an article and claim to be an "expert" - shame on you! 2/6/2008
Craig If anyone reading this is actually an IBS sufferer, don't take this advice, it is almost all wrong if you have IBS. A fresh vegetable salad will cause severe IBS attacks in many people with the disorder. Fiber will also cause IBS attacks as well as not eating enough fat. Fats are necessary and aid in digestion, if you trim all the the off of your meat, it will be even more difficult for you intestines to digest. Articles like this should not be written without proper THROUGH research. 1/2/2008
