Students often express there moods and feeling through the clothes they wear, I should know because I am a student. We should be able to express ourselves in the way we want to. If we have school uniforms that means that, yes students can't really judge other people by what they wear but that also means that students won't be so happy at school. Sure they might be calmer but then again if they are unhappy will they pay attention in school? I doubt that they will. I believe that those who dress appropriately should not face the consequences faced by those who dress inappropriately. kids will always be kids and no matter what they wear, they will always find a way to make fun of others. uniforms make no difference. you are who you are and no one or nothing such as clothing can change that. yes, i do understand the reasons given for being in favour of the uniform but, personally I am against the uniform policy. students should not be restricted from showing their character. Just by giving some1 a uniform doesn't mean every1's gonna wear the uniform. Another reason why it's good 2not have uniform is u don't always have 2rebuy the uniforms and u don't have 2worry about going out and having 2buy the uniform when u can use this money which is really needed lk food, or paying bills. I know alot of guts who have 2rebuy the uniform over and over cuz their still goin thro growth spurts. U know how much stress that takes off parents and students knowing they don't have2 worry about getting regular clothes and uniforms it saves alot of money. And the only thing u would worry about getting is supply 4school and regular clothes. It also takes alot of stress off of the familys that r poor and they only have2 worry about getting 1type of clothes. In each case there r things that r bad and can't get prevented but in my case which is I don't want uniforms to me it helps the students feel they can v trusted by the teachers and that they can express themselves and feel comfortable and not feel forced 2wear somethin they don't want2 wear and by not wearing uniforms we can show our real selves without feeling being pulled back by the uniforms. Now I read through the comments and have seen that most people say "Oh it's a freedom of expression." Yeah, and? School prepares us for the real world; in the real world...you're going to have to wear a uniform of some kind. If you work as an employee in a restaurant, a uniform is required. In an office, it may have to be ties, dress shirts, skirts but something formal and uniformed. Now, my family comes from Costa Rica, a country that has a very rigid uniform policy. My cousin wears a uniform, but she can still express herself. She has her hair the way she wants it, the earrings she wants, little things (as long as they are tasteful, of course). Not to mention, she also expresses her way through her school works and opinions. Clothes don't make the man...you do. | Tamara | I was an Australian student who also like others, dreaded the ol' school uniform. I couldnt understand the point of it. That was until I moved to Canada and didn't have to wear one. Getting up every morning and having to decide what to wear was one thing, but other student' opinion on what I wore and what others wore was another. I couldnt be buggered of what anyone thought of my clothes but at the end of the first week, i missed my uniform purely for the fact that i could not stand the clicks that they had and it was all based on looks. Now i understand that they do it so there is no people looking superior to others. In schools in Canada it was easy to tell which kids came from a well off background, and those who were struggeling. You might complain that uniforms are crappy but at least you dont get ridiculed for wearing your best clothes, that others think are crap (which I have seen done) and it is soooo much easier to deal with teenage drama without the issue what you look like. I would have given anything to get uniforms into Canadian schools, but they "were too cool for uniforms." | Olivier | I think a school uniform is a great idea and should be enforced in all schools- public and private. It helps kids to focus on what school is all about which is learning and studying rather than on fashion and superficiality. I think all public schools should do a better job at enforcing school uniforms. It is not uncommon to see public schools that are supposed to have school uniforms to have kids wearing sneakers, high heels or multi colored sweaters etc. They need to do a better job of enforcing a basic code. The reality is that even if you allow kids to wear whatever shoes they want you will soon have teenagers wearing high heels to school to try and impress others which is bad for their back long term. It also hurts the poorer kids in the public school system who cannot afford to change the shoes they wear every day or keep up with the changing fashions. On the other hand the private schools take it too far on the opposite spectrum enforcing school uniforms down to the smallest details. My friend’s daughter Candice Beaumont went to Sydney’s prestigious Ascham School for Girls. She was enrolled the day she was born as it was her grandfather’s family tradition and was compulsory for all Beaumont girls to attend Ascham. Her father is the well renowned prominent ophthalmologist and businessman Dr Beaumont. Not only did she have to wear a school uniform but the school even had school underwear that had to be worn…not that it was ever checked. Her mother found this quite ridiculous, and is taking the school uniform too far. Ascham girls also had to wear their school badges on their blazers and certain designated students would police the other girls outside the school gates to make sure they had their school badge worn in the correct manner. Granted Ascham is arguably the most ultra exclusive girls school in Australia and prides themselves on a stuffy English based history that traces back to Roger Ascham, tutor to Queen Elizabeth I. The students are the children of the Who’s Who of Australia including the former Prime Ministers daughter and Gretel Packer, the billionaire Kerry Packer’s daughter. It is not uncommon for Ascham girls to be chauffeured to and from school in their Rolls Royces so for some they can deal with the ultra extreme uniform code that goes with the school. Certainly, it seems the Australian government agrees with me. The Queensland Government Education Act August 2006 changed the education regulations so that school uniforms are now part of the Act. In a nutshell I think it is essential that kids have a uniform but the balance is somewhere in the middle of the road as to how strict we need to be in enforcing it. |
