Jonathan Eisen A key apsect of this project is that the papers were published in a new "Open Access" journal. Most scientific papers are published in places where one has to pay to read them. This is despite the fact that the government usually paid for the work once already. Open Access journals are trying to correct this waste of taxpayer money. Interestingly, though the people who supported the "public" genome effort can criticize Craig up and down about his "private" ties they generally only publish in the restricted access journals. Venter by publishing in an Open Access journal is thus being more public than they are 3/14/2007
Jonathan Eisen I think it is important to point out that the papers reporting the findings here were published in an "Open Access" journal (PLoS Biology) which means anyone out there (andnot just the scientific elite at major universities) can download and read and reuse the papers in any way they see fit. Though Craig may be known as one of the bad boys of science, he has chosen the high road in this case. 3/13/2007
