Personally, I have no problems with the captital punishment and I am, suprisingly, what some folks were call a card carrying liberal.
Here is why i hold my view...
1. Denial of basic right - Isn't that what the person being executed did to their victim(s). Let's not forget, we don't exececute people for
jay walking. They are on death row because they killed someone.
2. The possibility of error – This is a sticky point for me as I do work for the innocence project. There are plenty of people who are wrongfully convicted and there have been a few cases where peopel were wrongfully executed. I don't really have an answer for this and it would be the one and only reason I would be against capital punishmnet.
3. Unfair Judgment - This may be true, but the person still kiled someone and death in a death penalty state is an option. I don't argue that minorities may very well recieve a death sentence more often, but that does not require we discontinue it, merely equalize the judgments for all felons, regardless of race or gender.
4. Lack of Deterrence - I agree with this, at least in the US. There is no evidence that capital punishment deters crime. However, I am not against retribution or lets say it, revenge, which is really what capital punishmnet is in this country.
5. The prolonged uncertainty – If we are competent enough to lock a person away in an 8 x 10 box for the rest of their life, we are competent enough to execute them.
6. Justifying circumstances - This is a factor across the board in our justice system, not just in capital punishment. In fact, more individuals are locked away for long periods instead of recieving hospital treatmnet than are executed. In either case, how we prosecute persons is teh question, not the judgment we hand down.
7. By giving capital punishment, the family of the victim is permanently traumatized and victimized. They are often punished by their loved ones without their fault, even though they are innocent. -
And what of the family of the "victims" victim? i have little sympathy for the so called victim of execution as he or she had no sympathy when they killed. They may after the fact, but that is AFTER the fact. It's unfortunate that the killer's family must endure the pain, but their loved one caused pain and must pay a price. In this case, it is death.
8. Effects on society – And by playing violent video games, people are motivated to committ violent acts. Really? I don't think so. Whatever happened to CHOICE? FREEWILL? PERSONAL RESPONSABILITY? Are we as humans so frail and easily influenced that we cannot do these things because we stupidly choose to? |

5. its not uncertainty its the lawyers that choose to prolong the case so they can make money, if there are changes made to the appeal process C P will cost a lot less

2. error on the death penalty is VERY VERY LOW, of course our govt doesn't just give the death penalty just casually they do a lot of trials, make sure there sufficient evidence first!!!!

Actually, the fact is that of the people executed in 2007:
-- 28 were white
-- 14 were black
Those sentenced to death are not so sentenced because of their race or creed, but because of the crimes they committed. |

Have you heard of Legitimate Defense? Philosophically, the right by authorities to use necessary means to protect the community of the aggressor. Theologically, Catholic, Rightful autonomy given by our standard of truth, God. But since we have the means to attain the aggressor (prisons) then we have no need for capital punishment, unless the aggressor can some how further harm others. So I disagree, and agree. |

Im doing a debate & paper on why we think capital punishment should be outlawed. Your information given was very helpfun in many ways. It was clear and easy to understand. I didn't agree with the fact of getting rid of the death penalty, but now Im starting to think differently about it. Nowadays people are being served a wrongly death just based on them comitting a crime. Most of the time its when someone kills another human being. Even if someone is killed in the process I don't believe they should have to be put to death. I think if they serve there time then they will suffer a more painful death that way.That way in some way they are learning there lesson. If they die right after there court date then how are they suppost to learn from there crime. Also when such a crime is committed usually you pay for it your whole entire lifetime for it. |

This was perhaps the worst article I have ever seen. The numbers are wrong, you are using your ethical beliefs and trying to pass them off as facts, and you're telling people that we shouldn't use capital punishment because killers have feelings too, and they shouldn't be put to death just because they killed someone. They can go out and take someone else's life and we should just let them take up space in our prisons and waste our tax dollars because they're people too. They are people, the worst kind and the world is better off without them!!! |

C.P. is a confussing subject to argue. Murder has been going on since forever; literally, the second generation of the WORLD (Cane and Able). The Bible goes both ways on death as a punishment. It says in Matthew 5:44, ".....love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you." And also Matthew 7:1, " Judge not, that you be not judged." In Exodus 20:13 the 6th commandment is "Thou shall not murder." But there are so many 'What Ifs' that you could determine. |
