C L R Rao A good article. Approximate cost of hiring a specialist or Radon mitigating device, had it been given, would have been more helpful, i think. Is there any simple method like keeping an adsorbent in the area to mitigate the radon gas by replacing the adsorbent reggularly after lapse of some time depending on the adsorbents capacity and efficiecy. 4/17/2009

Marion A. Smith We will be closing on a house in Pennsylvania in about 3 weeks. The house inspector found an average radon level of 8.6 and has recommended mitigation. The company performing such mitigation recommends running a 3" pvc pipe from the basement, through the concrete floor and the soil beneath it, to the roof and installation of a fan to exhaust the radon from the soil. Something doesn't sound right with this technique. How can radon be removed from a 900 square foot basement by exhausting a 3" soil area? What do you think of this method and its purported effectiveness? 6/2/2008
