Kate Please add that the substrate should be according to the size of the crabs' shell (3-4 times deep)
so they can completely cover their shell when they tunnel down for the molting.

CRABBYJO You neglected to mention the need for ocean salt water for these creatures. Coenobita Clypeatus (PP's) can survive for some time without it, but all other species require it for healthy molting. Hermit crab salt water is an inferior product and lacks important minerals and should not be used. Only marine salt water mix should be used. 8/5/2010

jonathan dear mikayla hermit crabs love to clime i let mine clime up and down my shirt every night for exercise and if u think that gross go to the pet store and get fish coral but not the plastic kind that is soft they will eat it. 12/28/2009

Allie and Bree i think plastic cages are bad for your hermit crab because it can get warm in your cage and the plastic can give off cemicals and it can hurt or kill the hermit crab 10/29/2009

Eleanor We have had our hermit crabs for about one year, in that time they have not changed their shell at all, Is this normal? They have plenty of spare shells in the tank to choose from, and they seem healthy enough. We give them weekly salt bath, variety of food, regular water, and keep the tank heated with lid on. 10/3/2008

amanda penningt I have a question I am wanting to grow my little community of hermit crabs, to about 10 is a 10 gal tank big enough for that number beings I have a hut, 2 bowls, toys, log, shells ect in it? sarah t. my hermit crab at first when i got him\her it would not come out of its shell then i put it in my fish tank with my fish and it loved it! it loves to climb the rocks and it wont go back in its shell now!!!! hahaha so the best thing you can do is have trees,rocks,and artificial plants! trust me if you dont have any cage furnishings and your hermit crab is shy you need to get some....... it will show another side of your crab!!!! 9/18/2007
