Another thing, I forgot to mention. Reading the past comments I believe God has given us all the freedom of choice. So who is MAN to take that away? If I want I'll name my kid ching chang, Alexandar, Jihad, Prakash, or Whatever I want because that is MY choice and no authority has the right to change that choice of mine. People giving themselves authority of God, now thats something to be discussed :) |

Look at the world, a poor child has to go through all this whereas he has nothing to do with any terrorist activities....and remember what shakespeare said "whats in a name?" so if this kids name is Jihad it doesnt mean he is going to be a terrorist or whtever...Jihad is a holy name meaning religious war and for those who do not know the rules of Jihad, it says not to harm Women, Children, Elderly, Wounded. Only the two armys involved are allowed to fight each other. The word Jihad got its meaning thousands of years ago when there were no nuclear bombs or any kind of GUNS period. So if this child DOES become into a terrorist it won't be because of his name, for there are many terrorists with various random names like abdullah, Osama, omer... etc. Thus a name does not shape the kind of person one becomes! If anything this child named Jihad hopefully will finally do the right thing. As for his father supporting Al Qaeda attacks, thats is rubbish. Neither Al Qaeda nor America is doing the right thing, I think Al Qaeda is a disgrace to Islam and America is no better as its actions are a disgrace to humanity. tit for tat? eye for an eye? thats horrible. We are supposed to be living in a highly advanced world, so why do people act barbaric? We are known to be "intelligent life forms" I laugh at that, animals are more civilized than MAN. People should learn from animals, they respect each others territory, they fight one on one if they have to, and they never involve their young and only kill for food or mercy killing. THEY have a system not the humans.
My point is, leave the kid alone with whtever his name is it could be Jack or Jihad, but hsi surroundings and upbringing will determine who he will become. I truly hope his parents will teach him the true Islam not the altered Islam that people see on tv. |

Dear BBC, that's embarracing. I thought u knew better: Jihad simply means "efforts". usually boys are called Jihad when her mother had lots of pain during labour. so much stupidity of BBC is truly embarracing. get ur facts straight before u publish things. U have enought Arabic speakers who could easily translate!!! |

If you speak Arabic, the name is a real good name. However, you do not live in there. So when in Rome do what the Romans do!
I am from Iraq, Living in the US for the past 30+ years. I gave my son the name Alexander considering the name will fit everywhere. To make us fit the Muslim world our Christian parents gave us Arabic name now living in the US our name are not welcome thanks to 911. My first name is "Alaa" I am changing it.

Jihad is such a common name among Muslims that I think it's harsh to ban it. When I taught in Sierra Leone I had a Lebanese student with that name. He remains in my memory one of my favourite students. I'm sure that many European names have war-like meanings. |

I think that each and every one should be allowed to give name(s) to their child or children as they wish.As an African we do name our child after our ancesstors,big event,etc.That name is not going to determine the person whom he/she should be. To name a baby jihad does not mean is going to be a jihadist or terrorist.May be the child will even ignore that name when he grows up to be mature enough.Therefore the authorities in Berlin should allow Mr. Seyam the self-declared terrorist to name his child.The innocent child should not suffer for his father's act. |
