What planet is this person from? I have never seen a cake price for $15 per person! the prices I have seen were around 1.50 to 3.50 per serving. Its all the work that goes into the cake that makes them expensive. My mother-in-law made my step-daughters wedding cake-it took so much out of her that we are refusing to let her do her anniversary cake. For that cake, I personally spent a good 3 days making frosting roses, becuase I knew my mother-in-law wouldn't be able to make good roses- my hands hurt alot after that. Besides most bakeries and places that sell the cakes already have all the pans and equipment they need and do not need to buy more to make a freaking wedding cake. GET A CLUE... this is like the blind leading the blind. Don't spread false information as fact. |

Perhaps instead of removing comments made by professional decorators who are experienced in this field, you should remove the article that was written by someone who obviously had no clue what she was talking about! |

The persons who wrote this are clueless. Expensive cake pans? Toppers? They are costly. but that's not what makes a cake expensive. Cakes are time consuming, many, many hours go into decorating a cake. This time consumption is what makes a cake expensive. You can work days on the decorations that go on a cake. It is an art, that is well worth the price. It is one of the things people remember! |

So, dear Bride-to be, don't question that Nina is promoting a website that charges you to look at pics of cakes designed and decorated by others BUT, in the name of all that is good, you should ALWAYS question the price of a cake that was designed and decorated for you by the person you are giving your money to!
Nina, you are embarrassingly uneducated about this subject! You obviously know nothing about wedding cakes and should stick to writing about things you know. Or, at least, have the decency to research the things you write about.
BTW, I'd LOVE to know what the people who actually decorated those cakes and the people who OWN the photos think about someone else charging people to view them. If they are professional photos, you are committing a crime, unless you have written permission from the photographer.
One last thing... Bride- to be, do a search for "cake wrecks blog" Spend a little time on that site and you'll see just what happens when you use the cheapest baker you can find for your big day. |

Hmmmmmm?, have u research how much ingredients to make a cake are. Very costly, and real flowers usually cost more than fake ones. Also, culinary schools do not reduce their prices "really". And the cake cost more because the cake pans are expensive, seriously? Dorothy you need to click your heels three times and go back to Kansas. |

Here is a good cake story for you. Lady wants a 2 tier cake for daughters birthday. Iced in BC with fondant decorations, but doesn't want to pay the $80.00. So she saids she can get it cheaper $35.00,. I say, well if you can get that cake for $35.00 with all those fondant decorations, you better jump on it. She saids, oh no, no fondant decorations.
So a month later, I run into the lady, she tells me that she hated the cake she got, no one would eat it and it wasn't pretty at all. She trashed the cake. After I said I am sorry that happen to you, she saids "I wish I would have paid the $80.00 and got the cake from you. It would have been well worth it, what I wanted to start with and it would have been eaten.
So, go a head and get that really cheap cake...I'll bet my piping bag, you will wish you would have not listen to what Nina saids. |

If your home baker is illegal, the venue may refuse the cake... then what?! You're out the cost of the cake... and the cake! If the cost of the wedding cake is stressing the budget, then I think the wedding planned is too expensive to begin with. |

And lets be honest..Taste!..at least with bakeries you can shop around...All walmarts have the same flavors..not to say they are bad, but one thing is using them for my sons birthday party and another is for my wedding cake..I say NOT! |

ummm...you get what you pay for,,,ever hear that? wow, your misleading your readers in all kinda ways, but the funniest is that the wedding cake cost so much because of the pans. what the heck? I own the pans, I am in business to make wedding cakes. if you send your brides to home bakers, you also need to inform them that most home bakers are selling cakes illegally. |

Remember brides, you will get what you pay for. Yes grocery stores offer a selection of wedding cakes for less than most premium shops. The ingredients they use are not always the highest quality, but they can be very tasty. For my brides, that want a top quality cake the best way to lower the price for the wedding cake is to get a smaller cake for cutting and a sheet cake to cut in the back. A lot of my brides like a 3 tiered cake for 100 and a side cake for the rest of their guests. |

Do you have the faintest idea of the ingredient costs, the time and talent it takes to make a wedding cake? Decorate it yourself? What bride wants to be decorating her cake on her wedding day? The CAKE PAN is expensive? What are you thinking that we buy a new pan each time we bake a cake? Home bakers have similar costs to bakeries so charge the same price or very close. I think you need to get a clue before you put rubbish like this in print. |

Wedding cakes are expensive because they take hours, if not days to decorate and prepare. The cost of pans is the very least of the expenses. Ingredients for a quality cake are very expensive. Most bakers I know use REAL butter, and nothing but the very best ingredients we can find.Sugar flowers, ribbons, leaves, etc all must be made days or a week in advance, and take hours to make. The cake must be properly supported so as not to topple over on the brides dress. You are paying for the time, effort and knowledge that anyone must have to make a beautiful cake. A custom designed cake done by a reputable baker is an edible work of art and well worth the price. |

Whoever wrote this is crazy. For one, cake pans are not that expensive, and for two, most culinary schools won't let students make something for people outside of the school. Take it from someone who was in culinary school. My cake instructor would've laughed if someone had asked him that. |

I agree with the other comments. It does not seem like this article was research or fact checked very well. It actually seems like all information was taken from one source.
Don't get me wrong good quality pans are pricey. However, we buy those pans once and can use them for the next 20 years so the pay off is worth it.
Here's an example of why are prices (yes, home baker's too) may seem high to you.
I recently received $197 for two cakes that will feed 80 people (Cake #1 is a 1/4 Sheet Cake and Cake #2 is a two tier -stacked- cake)
After all ingredients and supplies were purchased I was left with $67 dollars. So divide that be the time that it took me to make these cakes. It took me a total of 18 hours to bake the cakes, make the icing and decorate.
$67/18 hours= $3.72
Do you really want to go to someone who is already only making $3.72/hr and ask them to lower their price?
We love what we do, which is why we don't whine about the "hourly wage" but when an article comes out with all kinds of misinformation it is a little upsetting. |
