Lean thinking is universal. It goes beyond the factories and service places. Applying lean concepts in the field of agriculture can reduce wastes in traditional methods and greatly reduce the costs involved.

Bob S. "Just in time manufacturing may not be possible in the field of agriculture." - Interesting comment- suggest that JIT is a relative thing in all cases (1 day, 1 hour,1 sec.,1 nanosec., etc.). Aligning different crops and different varieties to produce over the widest spectrum of the calendar rather than a large yield of fewer crops all coming ripe in the same time period. Changing over to right sized equipment rather than computerized behemoths, less specialized equipment more adaptable to multiple crops/tasks. Explore varieties that have the shortest growth cycles and balance against varieties with greater yield- greatest time is also greatest risk - ties up resources/labor etc. The possibilities to apply lean concepts are endless. 2/2/2009
Austin I have made a career using lean concepts in various industries. Having grown up on a farm, I have always been interested in agriculture. Watching the current attention that farming has been getting, my thoughts go back to it with lean thoughts. I found your note on the web. Did you ever generate any interest with your note? 9/9/2008
