Can a Personal Bankruptcy Prevent You From Getting a Job?

For quite some time, it's been standard for financial, gaming and government employees to have their credit reports checked by their employers.

XMW It's so awful that they are doing this. I have been unemployed for quite sometime now. It didn't dawn on me that it was due to my credit history. How can I get back on my feet and correct debt errors if no one will hire me? I am pulling my hair out and screaming every other day because I have 2 kids to take care of and I can't get a job. Not even a simple cashiering job! Now I understand why some people do the things that that do. When you are between a rock and a hard place, what do they expect people to do? There should be some law against this! And then the Republicans frown up at welfare. Again what are people supposed to do when there are not enough jobs to employ people, and the jobs that are hiring won't consider you because of your credit? The grand ole USA is screwed up royally ! ! 10/18/2009
maTT Not gonna lie, I think a credit check for a job is a bunch of bull, regardless of the job type. Personal history is just that: PERSONAL.
They should certainly take into consideration the fact that you've since vastly improved your situation.

Michelle Hi Stephen,
My husband and I had to file bankruptcy 3 years ago due to a job loss that left us financially devastated. Since that time our credit score is now in the high 700's so we feel we have been doing well considering. Recently, I applied for a position with an insurance company that required a credit check. I interviewed, tested and had a drive along with an employee of the company where I passed with flying colors. It was only after my background check was completed, no job offer came. My question is in the future when I apply for a position, will they take into consideration my credit score when looking at my credit and not just the bankruptcy?

Was lost While applying for a Reserve Deputy (a non paid, strictly volunteer position) my shakey credit history came into question. An unauthorized credit check was done...good to know I have rights. 7/26/2007
