Greeks and Turks Need to Bury the Hatchet
Nearly 200 years of antagonism between Greece and Turkey have reached a crucial point, and the future of EU integration is at stake, writes Helena Smith.

Just one comment: You said that Greek Cypriots face problems visiting Turkey. On the contrary, I have seen GC registered cars and met GC tourists in a couple of places on the Med coast, that have come to Turkey via TRNC (Turkish Rep North Cyprus) ferries from Kyrenia. They have not had any problems in Turkey. On the other hand, turks are NOT allowed to enter Greek Cyprus. Earlier they were arrested as illegal trespassers, but now adays they are normally just sent back to North Cyprus. Please try to find the truth before you make your ideas public! If you want to take a "neutral" stand, I think you should not see all information from the turkish side as propaganda and not all Greek "information" as the only truth. |

Quote: "If the talks on Cyprus fail it could well end any EU accession hopes Turkey has for the foreseeable future. That could lead to all sorts of internal destabilisation and would remove the main incentive Ankara has for changing many of its worse practices around human rights."
(This sounds like hack writing)
So what the author is saying is that if Turkey does not have it's way, then they will take it out on the local non-turkish population? That is hardly the behavior of a civilized government (sounds more like a spoiled brat who gets vindictive when they can't have their way).
It's easy to say 'bury the hatchet' when your name is Helena Smith (that does not strike me as one of the Levantine names). It's quite different if your name is Petros Brussalis or Garabed Hatcherian.
Even if Turkey was granted EU status, there is no guarantee they would cease their human rights violations. After all, they turned on U.S. inhabitants and property in Smyrna (despite our tacit approval for their independence), as well as butchering the Armenians who fought on the side of Turkey. Based on their history, Turkey has yet to show that it can be trusted. |

If your neighbor acts like a savage, stills most of your property and kills most of your family will you ever forgive him and be good friends? The Turkish history and Legacy is a "bloody trail". Their history indicating that. Thank God the EU kept them out. |

I think the Greeks should retake Constantinople. The Turks have NO historical right to this city! The Greeks should kick out all the Turks in Constantinople just like how the Turks did that to the Greeks. |

It is of course natrul to dispute but it must stop, so many people are losing their lives and the greeks seem to think the turkish are not people ! any person on earth is a person whatever their race or colour. And of course the rusult of of the fighting will be bitter but if they are not wiling to bury the hatchet then the rest of the world will suffer and there will never be peace! |
