Jelly This info is for Sue from way back in the year 2006. If you plan on keeping your betta in a small one gallon (or eeks!, less) glass container, then the temperature of your water should be around room temperature at the very least (preferably higher at 77 - 78 degrees fahrenheit). Water changes should be about 2 times a week minimum or higher. Sue, you need to replace the old fish water with fresh/new water. This fresh/new water has to be pre-treated with a water conditioner to get rid of the disinfectant most municipalities or towns use to kill off potential pathogens in our drinking water. This conditioner neutralizes or renders chlorine or chloramines into a safer substance for your fish. This fresh/water also has to the same temperature as the old water and left to stand for about 24 hours at least. You do need a fishnet too and a cover for your fish bowl or container. Don't forget, your betta breathes air, so the lid can't be air-tight. Feeding your fish is the fun part; variety is the key. Most reliable pet shops that sell fish sell high quality fish food made especially for bettas. Live food, such as brine shrimp is a treat for them. Sue, have fun with your betta. Oh, by the way, one betta per fish bowl, regardless of gender. And if you like live plants, may I suggest Java Moss or Java Fern - both these tropical plants require light, but subdued light and both of these plants are fairly hardy. So enjoy! 10/2/2009

Jelly A really good article, but might I add just one more thing. For tip #2, one might suggest adding a water conditioner to the water, since most municipalities add chloramines in place of chlorine as a disinfectant. A water conditioner, with a dechoriminator, would make sure that a betta isn't harmed by the chemical additive. 2/5/2009

Kilford Hi, Great article on betta, but I prefer the angelfish. They are sleaker, have special character and also wonderful colour. Did you know that angelfish can grow to the size of your palm? If you don;t believe me, check this out,
