The Serious Dangers of Mold and Mildew in Your House

Two years of severe hurricane hits along the Gulf Coast and heavy rains and flooding this spring in the Northeast are providing a nationwide breeding ground for indoor mold and mildew growth (some deadly) after the summer heat. What is the solution?

Johanna We never had a mold problem, but ever since a very heavy rain our basement beams got wet and now there is a smusty smell in the basement. Who do I call?Where do I start to take care of this problem. 9/17/2009
Sheila D. We moved into a rental house in February 2009 that has a basement. I, in hind site didn't request that the house be inspected, again, because it had been inspected within the year that we moved in.
My son and daughter are wanting us to move out because of the smell of mildew. I have found dark mold on wall board, all four corners of the house, an old sink cabinet in the bathroom downstairs which I recently opened and the smell and whatever else hit me in the face. I have a raspy voice anyway but that night it got worse, the next day I could barely talk. Since then it comes and goes. The house has an open stair way and the upstairs was refurbished but the basement was to be finished while we lived here. So far nothing has been done. The last few months each time I payed rent, I showed the landlord what I have found, and she has remarked that it needed to be taken care of, but so far nothing. She said my husband could remove the wall board if he wanted. He is disabled due to a brain bleed in 2006, has short term memory loss, medically induced Bipolar. gout (this one is recently diagnoised) and has Hep C. I have Fibromalyasia, Spondylolisthesis (just had back surgery) high BP, our oldest granddaughter has asthema and lives with us.
I need help because I haven't been able to concentrate and do not know where to turn to get help. I found another house to move to but someone else got it. We don't want to move out of this area but we are both disabled, I haven't been "approved" yet and we live on a fixed income since I'm not able to work either.
What should I do?
