Rick Starr to Ron Paul, the "network stations" complaint: Dish is prohibited by law from providing local network stations outside the home area. (You can sign up for national network feeds at additional cost.) Also, they are technically incapable of doing so, since local stations are provided by "spot" beam broadcasts from their satellites. The "beam" for Boston is not available anywhere except the Boston area, for example. This is not just a "Dish policy", it is law, urged by the local stations and broadcasting industry. DirecTV is the same, as were the other (now defunct) satellite providers. If you want the network stations while on the road, you have to pay extra ($5/mo gets you ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox) for that. 4/11/2009
Rick Starr Good article. The "numbers" on package costs and channel availability are out of date, but the satellite boys change their lineups weekly so that's not a surprise. One comment: with each passing year more and more campgrounds are providing cable "free" (or bundled with the site rental space). It's become an amenity which is almost a necessity anymore. I have watched the number go from 10% just a few years ago to (probably) 75% today. Of course for people who are "boondocking" (not in a campground) satellite is the way to go. 4/11/2009

Dave Hi:

I'm getting a bit confused and overwhelmed by the technological choices. Here's what I need - please steer me in the direction of the solution. Thanks!

I currently have TV and hi-speed internet service at home via my local cable provider. I have no home phone since I don't need one (my wife and I have cell phones exclusively). I would like to have TV and hi-speed internet service when traveling with our fifth wheel trailer. What is the least expensive/most practical way to achieve this? If necessary or less expensive (I assume so) I will replace the home services with the final overall solution. The ideal would be to have the equipment "portable" to either run it in/from the tow vehicle or the trailer - and to be able to use it while traveling down the road. Is this do-able? Thanks for your reply.

Ron Paul Dish Network WILL NOT provide network stations when you are
outside of your home area. This important information should
be listed very prominently in your description of their service.
I was confronted with this new situation when I got to CA thiss
year and was trying to get the local ABC affiliate so I could watch
the Rose Bowl game. INFURIATING hardly describes it.
