Thanks to Katrina Evacuees, Houston’s Homicide Rate Increases

After Hurricane Katrina struck nearly a year ago, Houston, TX, took in over 150,000 evacuees—more than any other city in the country. But Houston discovered that lending a helping hand has caused crime rates to rise.

With all due respect,

I AM SICK AND TIRED OF THE MEDIA REPORTING THAT 'HURRICANE KATRINA EVACUEES' ARE THE CAUSE FOR MURDER RATES RISING IN HOUSTON, TX.

(KWTX-KILLEEN,WACO) REPORTED THE FOLLOWING THIS EVENING
'In Houston, a higher murder count is being pinned on an influx of Hurricane Katrina EVACUEES'

WHY NOT REPORT THE FOLLOWING?

A higher murder count is being pinned on an influx of 'criminals' from New Orleans. When you say Hurricane Katrina evacuees, you automatically include the good citizens of New Orleans, thus creating more tension between evacuees and citizens of Houston, etc., continued discrimination, and humiliation for the decent citizens from New Orleans and/or the New Orleans area.

``We recognize that the homicide rate is up as far as raw numbers and as well as percentages relative to the population,'' said Capt. Dwayne Ready. ``We also recognize that Katrina evacuees continue to have an impact on the murder rate.''

Does this not send out subliminal messages that Hurricane Katrina evacuees are all bad? Maybe that is why I am having a hard time finding a job. I have even been told by a few residents here in Killeen, TX, 'Why don't you guys go back?' As if we are from some foreign country. As if I was NEVER a tax payer or an American.

Please write an article about those of us who are making a positive difference, pursuing a higher education and/or making some sort of progress that can not only benefit our families but others as well.

Thank you.

jd naum Everyone in Texas knew exactly what we were getting, but what can you do? We had to try and hope for the best. We took in thousands from the Murder Capital of the US. Hopefully, we can get these people locked up for good or they will go back home. 8/15/2006
