I agree that Jimmy Page is one of the great Rock guitarist, but he was better when he was in the Yardbirds. And as for the reason very few people cover Zep' songs, it's simple really, nothing to do with superior technical abilty, is the fact that Plant/Page couldn't write lyrics. The songs are a combination third rate Lord Of The Rings inspired verse and the crudest 'i'm gonna ball you baby', Blues based tropes. Plant in my view was always the weak link in the band. He had the image but his voice always sounded to me, too high pitched, like he'd caught his balls in his zipper and of course he was in the main responsible for the dreadful lyrics. Another point is that Zep' couldn't swing. They had the power and the majesty, but like their name they where leaden. It's no suprise that Zep's fan base was/is made up of predominatly testosterone fueled adolescent males of whatever age. If you wanted music that was sensuous, sexy and visceral and to find a female partner to dance with, then you'd be better of attending a Stones concert. The Stones always had a huge female fan base. 'Cos, the men don't know but the little girls understand'. For most people, with Zep it was always the guitars. Celebrate them for that, but a song band, no. |

I was at the famous Boston Tea Party 4+ hour show many moons ago. I have since seen virtually every great band of the rock era, and as excellent as a few of them were ie The Who in '69, AC/DC in '77, ect, none have ever remotely approached what we witnessed that long ago night in Boston. Led Zeppelin in their lean and hungry prime were just unbelievably powerful and mesmerizing. The raw musicianship that they possessed combined with that potent and magical chemistry gave them a unique dynamic presence and power that was intensely exciting and at times even a little unsettling. Led Zeppelin remain in a class all by themselves. |

I'm sorry but I have always totally hated Led Zeppelin since I was a teenager, they truly sound like one of the *WORST* bands I have ever had the misfortune of hearing! The along with Queen and Pink Floyd are the only 3 bands that I have to get up off of my chair even if I'm very tired and turn off imediately! I really can't understand how anybody can tolerate most of their noisy screaming screaching "music" and it's really mindboggling how anyone can find them remotely good much less great !
The Who,The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix were all a Million times better! And THe Beatles are a *ZILLION* times better! Hell even Van Halen sounds much better and I'm not even a fan of theirs! I'm not alone in feeling this way either I have found many other people who hate Led Zeppelin too and say they are one of the worst bands ever even some people on heavy metal boards! Many say Led Zeppelin stole and coppied old blues songs and that Robert Plant's lyrics are simple, ordinary and like a horny teenage boy wrote them! |

Nice job, Peter. As much as Led Zeppelin are revered and worshipped, I still believe they don't get the credit they deserve or at least that's commensurate with their talent and staggering musical contribution. I have yet to meet any open minded music aficionado that I could not turn into an admirer of Led Zeppelin. The people that dismissively criticize them usually are the least familiar with their music. Led Zeppelin have no peer in rock and roll. This was a perfect gathering of colossal talent, and yet the magical whole was much greater than the unprecedented sum of the parts. No band, not The Beatles, Stones, Who set., command a following as large and intensely loyal, spanning three generations, as the mighty Led Zeppelin. The unique brilliance of this band's music will be revered and appreciated after the vast majority of the 20th century's music is long forgotten. Thank's again for your comments Peter, and may John Bonham RIP. |
