Hi Phillip, Well ... this might be your opportunity to get on the top for a new practice (Testing) in your company. First of all ... you should think of processes ... try to figure out what type of processes are needed in current environment ... for example ... baselining of documents ... testing strategies ... etc. (in short ... you need to think about base-lining various processes) The most important part of setting up any verticle (Testing Practice/Verticle) ... is to have processes in place ... so try to first define the processes ... you may use documents from your previous company or any document for that matter for your referrence. (This is a kind of hectic work ... but its very very very important)
Secondly ... you will have to start working towards spreading Software Testing related awareness in your company ... that will help you in many ways!
Hopefully this will help you start your work ...

I just started at this company and they have thrown me into a department that has no process or procedures as far as testing are concerned. I would love to have some suggestions as far as how to start to even develop anything for this company. If you could give me some suggestions that would be most appreciated. I have worked for about 7 years in contract work in software testing and so far every company I have worked for has not cared for software testing. I am the only software tester that they have here at this company. The other QA person has not experience with software testing, and she really has no clue as to what to do either with software testing, so it really falls on my shoulders. Again if you can give me any suggestions as to how to approach this that would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Phillip Dean

"Exploratory testing is the only type of testing that can help in uncovering bugs that stand more chance of being ignored by other testing strategies... " --- the same can be said of scripted testing too! ..... "only type" ?!? |

You say above that exploratory testing is "a type of testing where we explore software, write and execute the test scripts simultaneously." It's important to note that, during exploratory testing, many tests may not be recorded or written down. That's at least in part because, at best, writing can only capture a fraction of the cognitive process of the tester.
Incidentally, another definition of exploratory testing is "simultaneous or parallel test design, test execution, and learning (with an emphasis on learning)". The interactive and investigative nature of this process is pivotal to improving test design. |
