Pagans Have Their Rites, Too

Does dancing in a circle, decked out in ancient garb, in the dead of night, while banging a tambourine, constitute a crime? This is the question many of the big-beards in the Greek Orthodox Church have been forced to ask as the realisation has dawned that Apollo-loving pagans are among us again.

stavros Please consider the following. As a nation Greece had to endure over 400 years of occupation under the Ottoman Empire. The indigenous people of Greece suffered greatly under this occupation with the occupation finally ending with the ethnic cleansing of 99.9% of all Greeks out of what is now modern Turkey (also please refer to the Armenian genocide for further clarity on the history of persecution in the region). From the end of the occupation onwards religious groups have tried unsuccessfully to convert Greece into following their brand of religion. Is it any wonder that as a whole the orthodox Christians of Greece are so protective of their faith and sick and tired of this constant attempt to convert the country. Of the 4000 people who were at this event 80% were foreign nationals (Great Britain Sweden France etc). As Greeks we have no issue with people coming to our nation as guests. All we ask is that as guests you respect the country you visit and take the local populations feelings into consideration when visiting. If you want to worship at an acropolis, then finance the construction of one in your own country and do as you wish. Greece is an Orthodox Christian country and respectful as we are to the 2% non Orthodox within our borders, 98% of the country do not want the acropolis to be reverted back to the status it had 2000 years ago and so it should be left alone. If James O'Dell from Corydon wants to worship at the acropolis in Athens and the local population does not wish this to happen, then James should accept this decision and consider saving for the construction of a temple of Athena or Apollo in Corydon. 6/13/2007
