"No Child Left Behind" Should Start At Home

More important than debates on how well this legislation works is the question of how a child is "left behind" in the first place.

Samantha I think this article is very acurate when it claims that parents often leave too much responsibility in the hands of educators. The " No child left behind" program is a great program for kids and has helped many kids succed that would not have if the program did not exist. Although this program has had success, some people think this program will always be around and find ways to keep the program running so why should they personally support the program? A lot of times people think "other people are going to support it so why should i worry about it right?". This program needs support because with more kids these days in the program, more teachers are needed and also the support of parents. These kids deserve a good education and should not get short-changed just because no one want to help them out . On the other hand, often times the parents of these students depend too much on the program. They pawn off their parenting duties on the teachers. I do not think that is right. Kids go to school to get an education and become "book smart" but it is the parents duty to teach the kids about life lessons and how to handle problems and issues they encounter. Do not get me wrong, you can learn some of those things at school too but not everything. Parents are very important in the growth of their childern and the type of adults they will become. I think that as citizens we should continue to support these programs as much as we can but also provide our " own service" and take responsibilty for our kids and helping them grow up. 1/25/2008

elisabeth's mom In a society that values quantity over quality many of your observations accurately describe a smaller population of families, but leave out the millions of children born each year into poverty. solution. The reality is that our country is saturated with children living on the fringes without parental support. Sadly, they are faulted because the two people who brought them into this world are absent.

People display their patriotism cheaply through magnet symbols on cars while more and more children are born each day into poverty. The cycle was interrupted in the 90s and we saw a decrease in birthrates and increase in headstart, afterschool programs, and job-site sponsorship for children living in poverty. But these programs are gone.

Working 18 years with children at risk for dropping off, I have experienced the sad reality that many of our chidren kids don't even know who their parents are and are left in the care of an aging relative or teen-sibling. So what do we do about this? Blame the children?

It is only when we come down from our mountain that we can get close to finding a solution. And you are way too high up on your mountain to recognize anything except a faint impression of what you think you see below.

whoseChildIsIt First time parents are endowed with responsibility to nurture their children not just with food but also mentally.
But still lacking is high expection for children.
Even high school students are treated on average like piece of glass that is so fragile as to be broken into piece if they cannot follow a little guidance. The system is oscillating extreme policies, political or not.
