Thai Language & Thai Translation
Information and resources on Thai language & Thai language translation. Approximately 1,000 mutually unintelligible languages are spoken in Southeast Asia, of which only the major national and regional languages have writing systems and literary traditions. From the standpoint of genetic relationship, the languages can be divided into nine separate stocks: Sinitic, or Chinese, Tibeto-Burman, Karen, Miao-Yao, Tai, Austronesian, Mon-Khmer, Viet-Muong, and Papuan. The first five stocks have traditionally been classed as Sino-Tibetan. It has also been proposed that Miao-Yao, Tai, and Austronesian are related in an Austro-Tai stock. Some scholars suggest that all nine stocks are related in an Indo-Pacific family, but none of these larger groupings has been conclusively demonstrated.
