Information and resources on Hmong language & Hmong language translation. The Meo peoples are known as the Miao in China, where they number about 5 million. Meo migrated from China into upland Southeast Asia in the 19th century, particularly into Laos, where they numbered less than 200,000 in the early 1990s. The Laotian Meo who call themselves the Hmong and consider the name Meo to be derogatory and supported the United States during the Vietnam War. Subsequently, many Hmong were killed by the Vietnamese army, fled to Thailand, or were resettled in the United States. The fiercely independent Meo generally live in isolated mountain villages and practice slash-and-burn agriculture. Below are links to information about the Hmong language.
