Information and resources on Finnish language & Finnish language translation. The Uralic languages are traditionally divided into two major branches, Finno-Ugric and Samoyed. Finno-Ugric in turn contains two subgroups: Finnic and Ugric. The former is divided into the Baltic-Finnic, Volga-Finnic, and Permian languages. Finnish, with 5 million speakers, and Estonian, with 1 million, are the best known of the Baltic-Finnic languages. Others are Karelian, spoken by 175,000 people in northwestern Russia and eastern Finland; Veps, spoken by 8,000 people between the Dnepr and the Volga; Votian, spoken by 700 people of the Udmurt Autonomous Republic of Russia; and Livonian, spoken by 500 people in the Livonia district of Latvia.
