Maps & Photographs
The map is an intermediary between a person and the environment and helps a person manage or navigate the environment. Map use falls into two broad categories. Some maps are designed for navigation and a wide array of way-finding activities and operations, while others are designed to help manage and understand the environment. Some maps are created to support measurement and analysis, with data carefully plotted and measured. These maps are used in scientific and engineering activities. At the other extreme are maps created for visualization: to be read by the eye, not with a ruler. These maps are often called thematic maps.
