The northernmost of the Baltic States, the Republic of Estonia is bounded by Latvia, the Baltic Sea, the Gulf of Finland, and Russia. It was independent from 1918 to 1940, when it was forcibly annexed by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Independence was restored in 1991. Estonia's landscape is of glacial origin, dotted with lakes and rivers. Forests constitute 35% of its territory. Its Baltic coastline is 1,240 km (770 mi.) long and contains many inlets. About 10% of Estonia's territory consists of islands in the Baltic Sea. The Estonians speak a Finno-Ugric language related to Finnish.
