It is a French colony and Fort-de-France is the capital and main port. The island is volcanic and mostly mountainous. The highest peak, Mount Peloe, 1,397 meters (4,583 feet) erupted in 1902. The climate varies little during the year. Agriculture is the main economic indicator, much of it in the lowlands. Pineapples, bananas are grown for export, and sweet potatoes and other vegetables are grown for food. Christopher Columbus landed on Martinique in 1502 and the first settlers arrived in 1635.
