Guadeloupe is a French colony, consisting of eight islands in the Lesser Antilles chain in east Caribbean Sea. These islands include Basse-Terre, Grande-Terre, and smaller islands of Marie-Galante, esles des Saintes, La Desirade, Saint-Barthyolemy, and the north half of Saint Martin. The climate of all the islands is tropical with a rainy winter season and closely-grown vegetation. Sugar cane and bananas are the chief exports. Tourism is important, but the islands rely on French aid and imports. Basse-Terre is the capital. The French eliminated the Carib people when the colonized the islands in 1635.
