Voyageurs National Park
Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota was authorized in 1971 and established in 1975. The park protects 218,035 acres of forested wilderness along the Canadian border, more than a third of which is water. Over 100 lakes with interconnecting waterways and islands make boating, fishing, and canoeing especially popular activities. The park's largest body of land, the Kabetogama Peninsula, is 25 miles long. Its rocky shores, gouged and rounded by ice-age glaciation, are indented with bays, coves, and inlets. Many of the mammals that inhabit the park are as likely to be seen in the water as on land.
