Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve
The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is located in the Flint Hills region of Kansas and was designated as a national preserve on November 12, 1996. The preserve is charged with the protection of a nationally significant example of the once vast tallgrass ecosystem. The area Tallgrass Prairie System that covered North America was once in excess of 400,000 square miles. Less than one percent of the North America's original tallgrass remains, and most of it is in the Flint Hills. Because the park is relatively new, access to the public is still rather restricted, with new openings being announced periodically.
