Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary

Monterey is a city in Monterey County, California, located on Monterey Bay about 200 km (125 mi.) south of San Francisco. Its population is 27,558 (1980). Once a fishing port, it is now a tourist resort. Settled in 1770, it became the capital of Alta California (1774) under both Spanish and Mexican rule. Many buildings from this era have been preserved or restored.
