Mammoth Cave National Park
Mammoth Cave National Park in southwestern Kentucky was established in 1941. It preserves a 52,708-acre area containing a vast limestone cavern. More than 336 miles of charted corridors traverse five levels, the lowest 360 feet underground. A boat ride on the Echo River in the cave's deepest level enables visitors to appreciate the role that water has played in creating the picturesque subterranean landscape of stalactites and stalagmites and translucent calcite draperies. Winding through the hilly woodlands is the Green River. The park was designated a World Heritage Site in 1981 and a Biosphere Reserve in 1990.
