Katmai National Park and Preserve

Katmai National Park and Preserve in southern Alaska at the northern end of the Aleutian Range was created in 1980 from Katmai National Monument (1918). Covering an area of 4,090,000 acres on the northeast coast of the Alaska Peninsula, the park is noted for its 12 volcanoes and large, salmon-filled lakes. Katmai volcano last erupted in 1912 , spewing millions of tons of ash and dust into the atmosphere and creating the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, where vents called fumaroles continue to emit gas and steam. The preserve encompasses Lakes Kukaklek and Nonvianuk.
