Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, on the island of Hawaii, contains two active volcanoes; Mauna Loa is the world's largest. The park, 229,177 acres in area, was created in 1961 from Hawaii National Park by designating the portion on the island of Maui as Haleakala National Park. It extends eastward from the summit of Mauna Loa to the Pacific, encompassing a 30-mile section of the coast. Kilauea, the park's other active volcano, rises from the eastern flank of Mauna Loa to an elevation of 4,090 feet. The park was designated a Biosphere Reserve in 1980 and a World Heritage Site in 1987.
