Hawaii Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary

The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary consists of the warm, shallow waters around the Hawaiian Islands. Narrative reports from whalers document the appearance of these awesome creatures in Hawaii in the 1840s, but there is little evidence to substantiate and earlier presence in the area. The waters around the islands of Kauai, Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Kaho'olawe constitute one of the most important North Pacific humpback whale habitats in the world. Scientists estimate that two-thirds of the entire North Pacific humpback whale population migrates to Hawaiian waters to breed and nurse their young.
