Haleakala National Park

Haleakala National Park on the Hawaiian island of Maui was included in Hawaii National Park when the latter was established in 1916, then designated a separate national park in 1960 and a Biosphere Reserve in 1980. Its 28,099 acres are dominated by the enormous crater of the dormant volcano Haleakala, which last erupted about 1790. Red Hill, on the western rim of Haleakala Crater, is the highest point (10,023 ft) on the island. The park’s indigenous wildlife lists 70 bird species, including the rare Hawaiian goose, or nene, the red and black apapane, and the dark-rumped petrel.
