Grand Canyon National Park

Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona was first established as a national monument in 1908 and given national park status in 1919. The park now encompasses 1,217,158 acres and was designated a World Heritage Site in 1979. It covers a high, pine-forested area of the Colorado Plateau that is bisected by the mile-deep Grand Canyon of the Colorado River. At the highest point along the edge of the canyon, Point Imperial on the North Rim, the elevation is 8,803 feet. The canyon bottom is a hot, desertlike area. The rocks in the canyon walls are rich in fossils.
