Gary's Reef National Marine Sanctuary
Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary is located approximately 60 miles off the coast of Georgia and comprises one of the largest near-shore sandstone reefs in the southeastern United States. The Sanctuary is named in recognition of Milton B. Gray, a biological collector and curator at the University of Georgia Marine Institute. The Sanctuary encompasses 17 square miles of open ocean, below which lies sandstone outcroppings and ledges up to ten feet in height. Gray's Reef is categorized as a "live bottom habitat" and serves as the home of an abundant array of invertebrates and also as a productive feeding ground for grouper, black sea bass, and mackerel.
