Denali National Park and Preserve
Originally Mount McKinley National Park when it was established in south-central Alaska in 1917, it was renamed Denali National Park and expanded in 1980 to 6,028,000 acres to include the preserve. Denali is the Athabascan Indian name for Mount McKinley, at 20,320 feet, the highest mountain in North America and the summit of the Alaska Range. In the park and preserve the range harbors dozens of active glaciers, some up to 40 miles long. At higher elevations the landscape reflects the erosive work of glacial ice, which has sculpted cirques, aretes, and U-shaped valleys, as well as other features characteristic of glaciated terrain.
