The Cape Hatteras National Seashore is comprised of over 70 miles of barrier islands along the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Within the historic park, visitors discover a fascinating combination of natural and cultural resources and a plethora of recreational opportunities. The area was once known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" because of its treacherous currents, storms, and shoals. Cape Hatteras is well known for its historic shipwrecks and lighthouses as well as the U.S. Lifesaving Service that is located there.
