Arches National Park

Arches National Park, situated in eastern Utah 9 miles north of the town of Moab, is famous for its giant stone arches carved into the red sandstone of the Colorado Plateau by the erosive action of frost, wind, and rain. In 1971 it was declared a national park. More than 90 arches have been discovered in this region, a greater number than in any other area of the continent. All are carved into a 300-foot layer of sandstone from the Jurassic Period, the age of the dinosaurs, although dinosaur fossils have not yet been found there.
