Appalachian National Scenic Trail

Appalachian mountains & appalachian trail. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is a 2,158-mile footpath that traverses the ridge crests and major valleys of the Appalachian Mountains and extends from Katahdin, Maine in the north to Springer Mountain, Georgia in the south. The Trail is managed by volunteers in 32 local clubs that operate under the Appalachian Trail Conference, in conjunction with the National Park Service. Trail construction was initiated by volunteers in October 1921 and was eventually completed by volunteers on August 14, 1937. Ninety-eight percent of the Appalachian Trail is now on public land.
