Adirondack Park

The Adirondack Mountains are a group of rounded, forested peaks in northeastern New York covering about 5,000 acres. Forty-five summits exceed 4,000 ft in height; the tallest is Mount Marcy (5,344 ft). Ancient Precambrian rocks (over 1 billion years old) underlie the mountains. Almost two-thirds of the region is included in the wilderness Adirondack State Park, created by the state, and it is a year-round recreation resort. Some iron ore deposits are mined. The Indians never settled permanently there, and the area remains sparsely populated. The name is derived from the Indian for "they of the Great Rocks".
