Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park is a mountainous, forested area along the Atlantic coast of northeastern Maine. The park covers 41,933 acres and is primarily on Mount Desert Island, but it also includes several smaller islands and part of Schoodic Peninsula on the mainland. Outstanding features include Cadillac Mountain (1,530 feet), a fjord called Somes Sound, a 20-mile drive that overlooks the ocean, and the Robert Abbe Museum of Stone Age Antiquities. Established as Lafayette National Park in 1919, it was renamed Acadia in 1929. John D. Rockefeller, Jr., donated much of the land.
