Kalaupapa National Historical Park

The Kalaupapa National Historic Park is home to the historic Hansen's disease (leprosy) settlements of Kalaupapa and Kalawao. The area was inhabited by native Hawaiians for hundreds of years, prior to the creation of the leprosy isolation settlement in 1866. The park consists of the Kalaupapa peninsula, its adjacent cliffs and valleys, and submerged lands and waters that extend to 1/4 mile from the shore. The park is home to many endangered species of Hawaiian wildlife and some of the surviving members of the leprosy settlement still reside on the grounds.
