Harper's Ferry National Historic Park

Harper's Ferry National Historic Park is located between the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers and has proved a pivotal location throughout American History. Named for Robert Harper, a Philadelphia builder who settled here between 1734 and 1747, the site was recognized by George Washington as an appropriate place for one of the two arsenals used during the Revolutionary War. John Brown, a radical abolitionist, seized the Harper's Ferry Arsenal in 1859 in an unsuccessful attempt to lead a raid to free slaves, thus leading America ever closer to the Civil War.
