Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument

Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument, near Hagerman, Idaho, contains one of the world's best collections of Pliocene fossils dating back about 2.5 to 3.5 million years. The fossils are contained in a layer of sedimentary deposits about 450 feet above the Snake River in an area known as the Glenns Ferry formation. Paleontologists have unearthed the skeletons of dozens of equines, which they called the Hagerman horse. These remains are almost identical to modern African zebras. The 4,280-acre monument, established in 1988, is always open to the public but does not have developed facilities, drinking water, or restrooms.
