Gunnison National Monument

The most notable area of the Gunnison National Monument is comprised of the Black Canyon. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument derives its name from the somber-colored granites and other Precambrian rocks that line the canyon walls. The Black Canyon consists of 12 miles of the deepest portion of the Gunnison River gorge, covering 20,766 acres. At its deepest point, the canyon is over 2,700 feet deep.
